Our Story

Norfolk Dredging Company has been engaged in hydraulic and clamshell dredging since 1899. Our company operates in all coastal areas performing both maintenance and new work dredging, with specialties in projects involving sub-aqueous trench and tunnel excavation, backfill and hydraulic landfill. Our Major area of operations spans the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf of Mexico.

Oct 24, 1899

Charter granted from the Legislature of the State of Virginia

 

1928

First steam-powered hydraulic dredge purchased - Dixie

 

1936

Washington I joined the company fleet

1941

New dredges put into service - Savannah, Atlantic, and Washington II

 

1950

Col. George T. Derby announced Norfolk Dredging first “million-dollar job.

 

1952

Awarded replenishing Virginia Beach oceanfront sand project

1950s

Craney Island - disposal area to serve as a repository for dredged materials from pier slips and harbor channels

 

1961

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel - constructed two tunnel trenches between Cape Charles and Virginia

 

1965

First portable hydraulic dredge launched - a new Ellicott 14” machine

1980

Lake Epcot - new techniques and procedures for preservation and improvement of the environment

 

1980-90s

Norfolk’s downtown waterfront - second downtown tunnel between Norfolk and Portsmouth.

 

1999
